About the Residency

Residency runs: September 2009–May 2010

Minneapolis, MN—Highpoint is pleased to announce the recipients of its seventh Jerome Emerging Printmakers’ Residency: Katinka Galanos, Miles Mendenhall, and Justin Terlecki. Beginning in September, these residents will receive nine months of access to Highpoint’s fully equipped printshop studio as well as technical support, critiques with area arts professionals, a stipend for printmaking supplies and the opportunity to work in a collaborative workshop environment that encourages experimentation and growth. The program will conclude with a group exhibition featuring prints created by the artists at Highpoint. It will open in May 2009—details to come as the date approaches.

The residency, funded with a generous grant from the Jerome Foundation, is open to emerging Minnesota artists—defined here as artists who show significant potential, yet have not received a commensurate amount of professional accomplishment or recognition. The three new residents were selected on the basis of their dedication, interest, and potential in printmaking and the artistic merit of their work.

Each resident has submitted a proposal for what s/he hopes to accomplish at Highpoint:

Using Susan Sontag’s phrase “Archaeology of Longings” as a conceptual departure, Katinka Galanos plans to use the residency to explore text-based work through screenprinting and photopolymer processes. Katinka received her BA and MFA from the University of Minnesota.

Miles Mendenhall hopes to re-engage with screenprinting, both its economy and graphic nature, to create large-scale prints. He has a BFA from the University of Minnesota.

Justin Terlecki plans to expand his repertoire of print techniques while creating new work based on images from his sketchbook and memories of his recent travels to India and southern Spain. Justin has a BFA in painting and printmaking from Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio.

A special thank you to jurors Caroline Swiszcz, Minnesota artist, and Todd Bockley, owner of Bockley Gallery and independent curator, who chose the three Jerome artists from a pool of 24 applicants.
