Jefferson School

Print Show and Spoken Word

On View: May 11, 2004 – May 28, 2004
Tuesday, May 11, 2004 from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Highpoint has been working for the past few months on an exciting partnership with Jefferson Community School, in conjunction with our neighbor Intermedia Arts. With the help of Intermedia’s Theresa Schulz, local spoken word artist Desdamona, and Jefferson School Principal Ray Aponte, we have created a unique project that draws together spoken word pieces, performance, and printmaking.

Students have been working with visiting artists in the classroom and at the two art centers. Approximately 400 students in grades 3 – 8 are involved in the program, which will continue through the coming months.

Anne LeDuc is an art educator who participated in several 5th grade class visits last spring. She comments that, “Our visit there Friday was so wonderful that I have been raving to everyone I know about you. The students loved it: when we got to school they wrote in their journals, a clear expression of success. The set-up, the interaction with the children, the creative process everything was exceptional.”

This partnership will culminate in an evening of celebration and presentation. Join us on Tuesday, May 11, 6:00 – 7:00 PM, for a reception and gallery opening of student prints at Highpoint. Stay late for a 7:15 performance down the street at Intermedia Arts, in which students will give spoken word performances for their families and community members. All events are free, and light refreshments will be provided.
