In this class, students will explore experimental printmaking through monotype techniques and investigate the theme of archiving memories. Class is structured into three parts: reflect, collect, and create, each section will include prompts to help students in the archiving process.

Part 1: REFLECT

Students will be asked to think of a place that is memorable to them, a place whose memories they want to preserve.

Part 2: COLLECT

Prior to the class, go to that place and collect at least 5 items significant to that place. If you can’t go to that place, collect items reminiscent of that place/memory. These materials will be the primary tools used to create prints. Make sure you’re okay with the items being inked. Ex: materials: wood chips / thread / food / carpet clippings /placemat/ shoes/ grass etc.

Part 3: CREATE

Come to class with an open and curious mind. This class will encourage students to embrace the uncertainty of the product, and really indulge the experience of the process. Students will learn how varied manipulations of materials lead to different prints.

Paper and standard inks (Caligo Safe Wash) will be provided. A sketch in advance is welcome, but not necessary. Students can expect to create at least two prints by the end of this workshop.

About the instructor: Boniat is an Oromo-American artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As she builds her artistic practice, Boniat centers the belief that art allows us to connect to the world, each other, our history, and ourselves in interesting ways. She seeks to investigate, experiment, and playfully create around those nuanced connections.

She has taught as an assistant teacher in Minnesota and Providence, RI in after school art programs, daycares, as well as one-on-one tutoring both in person and online.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
