Photogravure is a method of printing photographs (or other images) that dates back to the 1800s. As a form of intaglio/etching, photogravures are created by pressing ink, wiped onto a photographic plate, into dampened paper. The resulting prints possess a rich range of tones—from velvety blacks to subdued whites. Such tonality distinguishes photogravure from other photographic technologies such as silver gelatin, daguerreotype, and digital inkjet.

This class is aimed at photographers, printmakers, and newcomers alike. It will introduce the process and provide an open space for those familiar with photogravure to develop and share their own techniques. The course will encourage students to work with a limited number of images (2-3 ideally) to focus on the subtlety and affordances of the process.

While there are several ways to produce the plates required for photogravure printmaking, this course will use the aquatint screen method of polymer gravure printmaking.

About the instructor: Brian Kantor is a photographer, printmaker, and book artist based in Minneapolis. Influenced by the giants of photographic documentary, he is drawn to quotidian experience and creates art conveying the textures, contradictions, and humor of daily life. Based originally in digital photography, his art practice has grown to include silver-gelatin printmaking, photogravure printmaking, and book arts. This material activity is deeply informed by his academic background in the humanities. In that vein, he is working on a long-term artist book project that intersperses found text with his original images, playing with the history of thought and knowledge along the way.
