Multi-Session Workshop: Introduction to Mokuhanga

Date/Time: Thursday 10/2, 6-9 pm, Saturday 10/4, 1-5 pm

Ages: 18+

Cost: $300

Registration deadline: Thursday 9/18

Maximum enrollment: 10

Instructor: Yoonmi Nam

Skill Level: Beginning Level Mokuhanga

Some basic understanding of printmaking is preferred, such as the relationship between matrix and impression, color separation/layering, and the use of carving tools, but it is not required.

Learn the fundamentals of Japanese-style water-based woodblock printing in this two-day Mokuhanga workshop. Mokuhanga is a non-toxic, hand-printing process that requires only a small working space, allowing you to work without access to print shop facilities. Visually, it has potential for creating both precise and exact marks as well as expressive and painterly impressions. Through hands-on demonstrations, you will learn basic traditional carving using Hangi-to (knife), water-based pigment printing processes, and the traditional Kento registration method. The first day will focus on carving, and the second will be printing. Between the two workshop dates, students are expected to complete their carving and have their paper damp-pack ready for the second day. At the end of this two-day workshop, you will complete an edition of two-layer mokuhanga prints!
