Maple leaf

Falling down

Showing front

Showing back

Now it reveals its hidden side

And now the other—thus if falls,

An autumn leaf.

Right View comes from the Buddhist practice of seeing the world as a dynamic whole and in constant motion. We appreciate the particulars, but also connect with how they are part of the broader universe. In this way, we are seeing multiple things happening at once, and can hitch our perception to seeing through and beyond.

Similarly, the process of abstraction takes us through a journey where we venture forth into new realms of understanding, while constantly reducing to reveal deeper structure or feeling. As Hans Hoffman, said, “The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.”

About the artist: After many years raising funds to support the art-making of others at our city’s major cultural institutions, Doug is returning to building his own creative practice and has been a co-op member for four years. Graduating in painting from MCAD where he studied with professors who encouraged an examination of philosophy and perception in art-making, it was here that he also started printmaking. His work draws energy from a love of abstract painting—while stiving to break through the technical in printmaking with always-new experiences that incorporate collage, scale, mono-printing and hand-drawing.
