As If is a series of intaglio prints that investigates the 151 savants - the artists, scientists, engineers and mathematicians who accompanied Napoleon on his 1798 invasion of Egypt (along with 50,000 soldiers and sailors). As a military expedition it was an utter failure. The entire French fleet was lost in a single battle and a third of the soldiers and sailors died – most from the plague rather than as casualties of battle. The French were expelled from Egypt in less than three years. However what the savants achieved during those three years was longer lasting, and as such is the focus of this solo exhibition by longstanding HP co-op member Brian Hartley Sago.
