Hosted by Tangible Collective, Black Mark: Intro to Silk Screen Printing is an introductory, hands-on workshop for those interested in exploring the basics of printmaking. This course is for BLACK FOLX ONLY. We will focus on silkscreen print processes. The course will offer the participants insight into innovative printing approaches currently being done within the world of fine art printmaking. Additionally, the class will provide a context of Black art history within the medium of printmaking and references to contemporary practices. The course will take place over the span of four sessions that build on each other and include demonstrations, guided work time, and opportunities to show work. All materials needed to print will be provided
Materials Required/Preferred:
For note-taking and possible sketching, a notepad and pencil is suggested.
What the fee includes: The sliding scale fee of ($10-$20) helps cover food and snacks over the four-session course.
Instructor Bio
Connor Rice (CRICE) is an artist from Southside Minneapolis. He is a recent recipient of the Metro Regional Arts Council’s Next Step Fund, the Minnesota State Arts Board emerging artist grant, and a Jerome Foundation Emerging Printmakers residency. Sociopolitical issues concerning race, class and the environment influence his work greatly.
As a multimedia artist working with printing, public art techniques, and digital tools, he is always attempting to bridge the gap between traditional methods and innovative technologies.
His aesthetic is heavily influenced by hip-hop and street art as well as ancient propaganda. By using stark iconography with a bold color palette on a large scale, his work is provocative in how it relates to the viewer’s relation to space. He employs ancient symbols and blends them with a modern sensibility in order to distort our preconceived notions of human history.
What is Tangible? (Synopsis)
The Tangible Collective is committed to building spaces devoted to Black Millennial thought and expression — valuing it, encouraging it, and centering it to make it tangible. The space has grown into a community pulse for Black Millennials and the collective supports expression ranging from self-care to performative arts.
A core understanding of Tangible Collective is that Black folx have all the tools necessary to engage and manifest liberation; Tangible Collective's job is, therefore, to hold space for that emergence where Black art can live and develop organically. The intention behind the collectives’ process of holding space and creating platforms is to make room for healing, affirmation, meaning-making, community-building, and self-reflection through art.
