Instructor: John Schulz
Skill Level: Beginner
This class is for those who are interested in exploring the expressive potential of the woodcut/relief print. As the oldest print medium, woodcut’s simplicity allows for direct, intuitive involvement and great flexibility in individual approach; this may range from developing stark, powerful images in black-and-white to building rich, textural, painterly images in color. We will cover all the basic technical information on types of wood for woodcut, inks, carving tools and tool maintenance, paper, printing with and without a press (and without a printshop), and options for developing multi-block prints and color. The emphasis of the class will be on developing individual vision and approach, and at the conclusion of this course, students will have a solid understanding of the medium with the goal of being able to continue to develop their work independently beyond the classroom.
About the instructor: Originally from Superior, WI, John Schulz (he/him) taught relief printmaking and drawing at the School of the Museum of Fine in Boston from 1995 to 2021. He has since returned to the Upper Midwest where he maintains a full-time studio practice in Saint Paul, MN. His work is deeply involved with the lower common denominators of visual culture, and makes use of chance operations, systems, and cut-ups to create new, unforeseen images that are at once enigmatic, strangely beautiful, and vaguely threatening.
