Dive into the expressive possibilities of intaglio through softground and sugar lift etching, exploring texture, gesture, and layered imagery. Students will work across two copper plates using black and colored inks to create dynamic, multi-layered prints. The course covers key techniques and skills including paper preparation, multi-plate image planning, and precise registration, as well as à la poupée inking for painterly color blending and printing multiple colors at once.
Emphasizing experimentation over strict editioning, students will explore variables such as color, ink opacity, paper types, and plate sequencing to produce unique, variable prints. The class combines demonstrations, lectures, discussion, guided instruction, and studio work time. All materials are included, though students are encouraged to bring sketchbooks or reference images to support their ideas and creative development.
