In this beginners-friendly course we will learn different monotype methods while drawing inspiration from our dreams, a door into the creative unconscious. Each student will be given a dream journal during the first class, which they can use and reference throughout this six-week course (and beyond).

Each class will begin with a brief dream check-in, followed by making art. The first three weeks will run like a one night workshop, with instructional time followed by printmaking. We will learn how to make reduction monotypes, stencil monoprints, and water-soluble monotypes. The remaining three weeks will be all yours to play and experiment with the methods we learned. Whether that is combining techniques, diving deeper into your favorite one, or letting your dreams decide.

This course is great for students new to monotype and returning printmakers looking to widen their artistic practice. All materials are provided by Highpoint.

About the instructor: Mads Golitz (they/them) is a printmaker and educator living in the midwest. They hold a BA in Studio Arts from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. Mads has worked with Highpoint as an Education Intern and is currently the Education Programs Assistant. They have taught several youth and adult workshops of various printmaking techniques. They encourage exploration and experimentation in their students' work as well as their own. Their practice is currently focused on symbolic imagery using intaglio and monotype techniques.

Celebrate Mother’s Day at our Pochoir Card Printing Workshop. Participants will explore stencil printing by dabbing ink through templates to create one of a kind cards. Choose from premade stencils or design your own using craft knives and scissors. This workshop is a way to craft something meaningful for the mothers in your life!

Sampler Session: Reduction Relief

Create and take home an edition of 6 multi-layered reduction relief prints! In this workshop, you’ll carve a design in stages into a soft, easy-to-cut block. After each carving step, you’ll apply ink and print onto paper, building layers of color and detail one at a time. With each stage, more of the block is carved away. By the end, you’ll have 6 identical layered prints!

Sampler Session: Pressure Printmaking

Create and take home 6 pressure prints! In this workshop, you will arrange paper stencils, fabric, and other materials on a backing sheet to create a collage. You’ll place the paper on an inked piece of plexiglass and run it through the printing press to transfer the image. The result is a soft, textured print.

Sampler Session: Father's Day Cards: Stencil Monotype

Celebrate Father’s Day at our Stencil Monotype Card Printing Workshop. Participants will explore stencil printing by cutting paper stencils to build an image. After inking the stencils and applying them to a plexiglass plate, it will be run through an etching press to create greeting cards. Choose from premade stencils or design your own using craft knives and scissors. This workshop is a way to craft something meaningful for the fathers in your life!

Sampler Session: Screenprinted Zines

Create and take home an edition of 6 screen printed zines! In this workshop, you’ll learn how to create stencils for screen printing using paint markers and a photosensitive material called emulsion. Prints are created by pushing ink through the screen with a squeegee, and by reusing your stencil, you’ll produce a set of 6 identical prints. You’ll also explore the basics of zine making, assembling your prints into small, self-published booklets to share or keep.

Sampler Session: Contact Paper Screenprint

Create and take home an edition of 6 bold, graphic screen prints! In this workshop, you’ll cut designs into contact paper and adhere it to a screen to create a stencil. Prints are created by pushing ink through the screen using a squeegee. By using the stencil again and again, you’ll end up with 6 identical prints!

Sampler Session: Pronto Plate Lithography

Create and take home 6 pronto plate litho prints! In this workshop, you will draw on a polyester plate using waterproof drawing materials. You’ll use water to dampen your plate, add ink, and send it through the printing press to transfer your image. The result is a rich, detailed black and white print.

Sampler Session: Tessellation Printmaking

Create and take home your own tessellating design! In this workshop, you’ll design a repeating pattern that fits together seamlessly, then use a carving tool to transfer and carve it into a soft, easy-to-cut block. Prints are created by adding ink to the block and pressing it onto paper—similar to a stamp. Because your design tessellates, you can repeat it across the page to build intricate patterns. Reuse your block again and again to create interlocking compositions!

Sampler Session: Drypoint

Create and take home an edition of 6 etched drypoint prints! In this workshop, you’ll scratch a design onto an acrylic plate with a sharp tool. The burrs that result from scratching trap and hold the ink applied to create soft lines when put through a printing press with a piece of damp paper. You can repeat the printing process to create 6 prints!

Sampler Session: Cyanotype

Create and take home 6 cyanotype prints! In this workshop, you’ll prepare your paper with cyanotype chemicals and then add dried florals, fabrics, and other found materials to create a silhouette design. You’ll place your design in sunlight (or our exposure unit) to expose the paper and develop the image in water. The result is beautiful, vibrant blue prints.
