This workshop will demonstrate numerous possibilities for reductive woodcut printmaking.  Participants will learn a very expressive medium through demonstrations, discussions, and work time.  Participants will design, carve and print two small editions of prints.  Students will learn best studio practices, the fundamentals of image transfer, carving techniques, stencil use, selective inking, and registration techniques.  This process will utilize both hand printing and an etching press.  This will not be a traditional approach to woodcuts.  It will be inventive and spontaneous, direct and simple. Using a variety of methods, participants will be encouraged to discover their own creative approach to woodcuts.

About the instructor: Carl Nanoff (he/him) studied architecture and studio arts/printmaking in college.  He worked as a draftsman/structural designer.  He has been a member at Highpoint Center for Printmaking for 10+ years.  He has conducted classes at Highpoint Center for Printmaking, and training sessions in cad design.  His art is influenced by the geometric nature of his drafting experience, architecture, and various abstract art movements.  His printmaking experience is lithography, woodcuts, dry point, and mono-prints.  His current printmaking practice is to experiment and push the boundaries of traditional printmaking.
