Explore the expressive possibilities of drypoint printmaking in this introductory workshop focused on mark making, experimentation, and image development. Whether you're new to intaglio or looking to deepen your practice, this class offers a supportive environment to build technical skills while embracing the creative process.
Students will learn the fundamentals of drypoint on copper, using both traditional printmaking tools and improvised mark-making techniques to create rich, expressive surfaces. Participants will receive two copper plates: the first for experimentation and developing confidence with different marks, and the second for creating a finished image that will be printed as a small edition. Students will explore how to revise and strengthen an image through scraping, burnishing, and layering new marks. The workshop will cover proofing, wiping methods, paper preparation, and printing techniques to achieve a variety of visual effects. Throughout the class, participants will engage in demonstrations, studio work, and supportive group discussions that encourage reflection on process and artistic intent.
About the instructor: Born in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, Niall Bingham (he/him) studied Fine Art at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, completing a BAVA (Hons) in 2005. It was here, while studying printmaking under Vulindlela Nyoni, where he developed a passion for the medium. On an exchange year at Kansai Gaidai University in Hirakata, Japan he studied Japanese art, literature, and traditional studio techniques.
Upon graduating, he moved to Johannesburg to work at the David Krut Print Workshop from 2006 to 2011, collaborating with leading South African artists including William Kentridge, Diane Victor, Willem Boshoff, and David Koloane.
He later served as Printmaking Technician at the University of the Witwatersrand, and completed an MAFA there in 2016.
From 2020 to 2025, Bingham worked at Atelier Le Grand Village in southern France, whilst residing in Northern Spain. His commitment to printmaking is underscored by an ongoing dedication to improving his own methods of collaboration with artists and other printmakers.
His recent artistic practice concerns itself with the intersection between nostalgia for, and the reality of life in his country of birth, South Africa. The work seeks to be self-aware enough to question the authenticity of memory.
Now based in Minneapolis, Niall Bingham is a collaborative printmaker at Highpoint Centre for Printmaking. .
