This introductory course offers students a hands-on exploration of traditional etching, where they will learn to create detailed and textural prints. Etching is an intaglio printmaking process in which a metal plate is coated, drawn into, and then etched in a corrosive bath to create recessed lines that hold ink. Ink is then carded onto the plate and wiped away from the surface, leaving ink only in the recessed areas; the plate is then printed onto damp paper to produce the final image. Participants will experiment with line etching, aquatint, and other methods of adding color to their work. As they develop their images, students will practice essential inking, wiping, and printing techniques. Class time will be split between demonstrations and guided work time. By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of core etching methods and intaglio printing, and original prints showcasing their progress and creativity. Students will likely produce 2 images.
This is a beginner level course.
