Bianca Pettis, Jonathan Herrera, Mike Marks
Highpoint is very pleased to announce the recipients of its fifteenth Jerome Emerging Printmakers Residency for 2017-2018: Bianca Pettis, Jonathan Herrera, and Mike Marks. Beginning in September, these artists will receive nine months of access to Highpoint’s fully-equipped printshop as well as technical support, critiques with arts professionals, a stipend for supplies and the opportunity to work in a collaborative workshop environment that encourages experimentation and growth. The program will conclude with a group exhibition in May 2018 featuring work created by the artists during their residency.
The residency, funded with a generous grant from the Jerome Foundation, is open to emerging Minnesota printmakers — defined here as artists who show significant potential, yet have not received a commensurate amount of professional accomplishment or recognition regardless of age or recognition in other fields. Residents were selected on the basis of their dedication, interest, and potential in printmaking as well as the artistic merit of their work.
Each artist has submitted a proposal for what he/she hopes to accomplish at Highpoint:
Bianca Pettis was born in Denver, grew up in North Carolina but has (mostly) been a Minneapolitan since 1996. She just received an MFA in painting from the University of Minnesota. She also has a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Antioch College. A truly multi-disciplinary artist, Bianca is excited to spend the next nine months pushing her work in a new direction using screenprinting and other print techniques she plans to learn more about.
A native of Chicago, Jonathan Herrera is a brand new BFA recipient from the Print, Paper, and Book program at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Jonathan plans to employ a variety of processes, including lithography, screenprinting, relief, and monotype to create a print-based series that focuses on collective and individual narratives regarding the loss of identity and the loss of life.
Originally from West Virginia, Mike Marks holds an MFA in printmaking from the University of Delaware and a BFA in drawing for the Cleveland Institute of Art. Mike plans to use collograph and relief techniques to create a series of prints and objects that explore the differences between landscape and nature as well as the consequences of our land use.
Highpoint would like to thank this year’s jurors Lamar Peterson (Assistant Professor of Drawing and Painting, University of Minnesota) and Nicole Soukop (Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art and the Minnesota Artist Exhibition Project Coordinator at Mia) who selected this group of Jerome Emerging Printmakers.
Finally, Highpoint Center for Printmaking extends deep gratitude to The Jerome Foundation for its 15 years of support of this program. The Jerome Foundation, created by artist and philanthropist Jerome Hill (1905-1972), seeks to contribute to a dynamic and evolving culture by supporting the creation, development, and production of new works by emerging artists. Based in St. Paul, MN, the Foundation makes grants to not-for-profit arts organizations and artists in Minnesota and New York City.
